[Also in Division D1] In a heating device for travelling synthetic filaments the filament 2 is passed over the surface of a resistance heating element 1 whose cross-sectional area is varied in the direction of travel to ensure that the temperature distribution is substantially constant along its length. As shown, the width of the element varies, but in Fig. 5 (not shown), holes are provided along the length of the element. The element may be in the form of a split tube. The heating element may comprise a thin steel strip of variable width mounted on an anodized aluminium support. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the thickness of the heating element varies along its length. Fig. 9 shows a twin plate heating system in which both heating plates 11, 12 are carried by a pivoted support 13. In the event of lap formation of the rollers 15, 16, support 13 is displaced against the action of spring 17 to actuate a microswitch 19 controlling the drive. Current may be induced in the heating element or supplied from terminals as shown.</p> |
