Cylinder form gas generator for inflating a device for protecting one or more occupants of a vehicle against impact, particularly for a lorry driver and his co-driver, comprising a central combustion chamber with igniter and propellent charge and with fiths in axial arrangement or both sides of the combustion chamber. The generator possesses at least an axially extending pressure chamber housing (3;4) with axial rotational symmetry, that the housing (3;4) holds in its mid portion (9;10) the combustion chamber (18) with the propellent charge (19) and the igniter (23), and in each of its side components (11;12) of reduced cross section a coarse fitter element (22), that each side component (11;12) is provided with gas outlet openings (16;17) around its circumference and for its full length, and being radially spaced apart from a hollow cylindrical fire filter element (26), that the combustion chamber end of each fire filter (26) is supported in the regions of the joint with the combustion chamber, that the end of each fire filter (26) remote from the combustion chamber is supported by a rotationally symmetrical, gas tight end-plate (24) connected to the combustion chamber remote end of each side component (11;12), and that the outside dia. of each fire filter (26) corresponds to approximately that of the outer dia. of the central portion (9;10) of the housing (3;4).
