Capillary gels and methods useful in the analysis of nucleic acid sequences are disclosed. The gels contain at least one neutral non-urea denaturing agent comprising at least one moiety capable of disrupting hydrogen bonding and at least one moiety capable of reducing intramolecular base pairing of nucleic acids. Preferably, the non-urea denaturing agent is an amide, where the hydrogen disrupting moiety is an amine, and the moiety capable of reducing intramolecular base pairing is selected from the group consisting of H, an alkyl having from between about 1 and about 6 carbon atoms, benzene, and benzene derivatives. Most preferably, the non-urea denaturing agent is formamide. <IMAGE>
