A carrier for a hydrotreating catalyst, useful in the production of lubricating oils from crude hydrocarbon oil stocks, is prepared by mixing alumina and a solution of fluosilicic acid and a mineral acid followed by extrusion, drying and calcining. The resultant carrier may be impregnated with a solution of metal components and then calcined and optionally sulfided, to give a catalyst that comprises at least one Group VI metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, and at least one Group VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, supported on the carrier, wherein (A) the catalyst comprises from 10% to 35% by weight of combined metal, and the atomic ratio of the Group VIII metal to Group VI metal is from 0.5:1 to 2:1; (B) the carrier comprises from 0.5 to 10 weight percent of fluorine, from 0.5 to 5% by weight of silica and from 85 to 99% of alumina; and (C) the catalyst has a median pore radius of from 30 to 65 Angstroms, and a surface area of from 120 to 180 m²/g.
|
