High tension voltage is applied to the X-ray tube via a number of control units that are connected in series with the positive and the negative supply, respectively. Each control unit (11) includes a transistor (27) which conducts according to the difference between the actual level and the required level of voltage as determined by a comparator (20). The actual voltage level is derived from a potential divider (22) connected between the output terminals (A+, A-) of the unit and the required level is derived from control inputs (E+, E-). These are produced by regulators in connection with a reference voltage. The required level for the next control unit in the chain is derived from the output volt-age of the preceding control unit. Each unit is provided with a voltage limiting circuit for short circuit protection.
