PURPOSE:To suppress the oxidative deterioration of a negative electrode active material alloy and extend the life by forming a negative electrode by mixing a hydrogen storage alloy which is the main component with a minute amount of metal palladium fine particles. CONSTITUTION:In a paste type electrode using a foamed nickel as an electrode base body, metal cobalt powder, a polyvinyl alcohol as a binder, and a sufficient amount of water are added to nickel hydroxide which is an active material to form a slurry, which is then charged in the electrode base body followed by drying and pressed by roller to form a nickel electrode having a determined thickness. In a metal hydride electrode, for example, powder of LaNi4.6Mn0.2Al0.2 is used as a hydrogen storage alloy. To this alloy, palladium fine particles prepared by using polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid agent and the polyvinyl alcohol as the binder are added, and the metal hydride electrode is formed in the same manner as in the nickel electrode. Thus, the gas absorbing reaction speed in a sealed battery vessel is improved to suppress the oxidative deterioration of the negative electrode active material, and the battery life can be improved. |
