Novel compounds of Formula I <FORM:1057403/C2/1> in which R is hydrogen or a C1- 18 acyl group, R1 is a C1- 18 acyl group, and R2 is a alkoxy or C1- 6 alkylthio group, are prepared by subjecting a compound of Formula I in which R is a methyl group to the action of chloride of a tetravalent metal as catalyst, whereby the 1-methoxy group is dimethylated, and, if required, the resulting product is simultaneously or subsequently reacted with a lower acylating agent. |
