<p>A bottle cap (10) is for repeatedly obtaining airtight sealing engagement with a bottle (12) having an annular external lip (18). The cap (10) is particularly well suited for sealing bottles (12) containing sparkling wine or champagne (14), since such bottles (12) conventionally include an external lip (18) and since the cap (10) of the present invention is able to seal gases within the bottle (12). The cap includes a housing (24) having a central aperture for positioning over the neck (16) of the bottle (12) and having a radially inward directed flange for fitting beneath the external lip on the bottle (12). An activating carrier (34) is movable within the aperture in the housing, and a ring-shaped pad holder (46) and elastomeric pad (52) are mounted on and are axially movable with respect to the carrier (34). A biasing spring (49) is provided for acting on the holder (46) and the pad (52) to bias the pad toward sealing engagement with the bottle (12). A handle (64) is rotatably secured to the housing, and includes a cam lobe (68) for engaging the carrier (34) and thereby energizing the spring (49) to force the pad into sealing engagement with the bottle (12).</p> |
