Apertured tubes held in parallel in a casing receiving IC engine fumes, esp. from Diesel engines, remove carbon particles from the fumes during outward passage from the apertures through one or more layers of filter fabric round the tube. The layers are knitted, e.g. as a tubular structure, from mineral fibres or yarns. A double layer may be formed by turning an initial sleeve back on itself. Two knitted layers, integral or separate, may have an intermediate layer of non-woven or woven fibrous material, or a knitted wire spacer.
