1,063,624. Heating and cooling garments. SOC. ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON. May 20, 1964 [June 5, 1963], No. 20909/64. Heading A3V. A method of air conditioning clothing comprises circulating a stream of compressed air in a vortex chamber having a cold air outlet and a hot air outlet, the outlets being alternatively connectable to the inside of a garment. As shown, compressed air passes through a pipe 17 and a heat exchanger coil 16 wound around an ice tank 15 to a vortex chamber 3, a cold air outlet 4 leading to pipes 6 within a protective suit 1 and a hot air outlet 9 leading to atmosphere. The outlets 4, 9 have silencers 5 and 10 respectively and a needle valve 11 is adjustable to vary the temperature of the cold air supplied to the suit which includes non return exhaust valves at 8. The pipe 17 may be pre-cooled by the flow of melted ice from the tank 15 through a sheath 18 surrounding the pipe. Alternatively the pipe may be lagged with strip material constantly soaked with melted ice. If it is desired to supply hot air to the garment interior a branch circuit which by-passes the heat exchanger is used. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the compressed air bottle is located within the housing 2. In a further embodiment the heat exchanger comprises a duct leading from a bottle of liquefied refrigerant within the housing, the air inlet pipe 17 being coiled around the duct which discharges the vaporized refrigerant to atmosphere. |
