A sugar chain of the following formula is disclosed. <IMAGE> (I) <IMAGE> It can be prepared by separating glycoproteins from cell membrane components by using lectins which recognize the sugar chain, releasing the sugar chain structure from the glycoproteins, and purifying the released sugar chain. The sugar chain is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
