[Also in Division A5] Powdered citric acid and powdered sodium bicarbonate are reacted by heating in the presence of from 2-15% by weight of water, and the product dried to form an intermediate product which is used in the manufacture of stable effervescent compositions by admixture with an alkaline component and other ingredients. The powdered sodium bicarbonate is used in a proportion of from 30 to 80% of the stoichiometric proportion for the complete salification of the citric acid, and the product is a mixture of mono-, di-, and tri-sodium salts of 1,2,3-isopropanol tricarboxylic acid with from 70-20% free acidity.</p> |
