Device comprising a carrying unit (11), a manipulator arm (14) equipped with means for articulation onto a gear lever (15) and with linear actuators controlling the displacements of the said manipulator arm in at least two intersecting directions, characterised in that the unit (11) is held substantially vertically in line with the gear lever (15), and in that the manipulator arm (14) is mounted like a pendulum under the carrier unit (11) and is coupled to the gear lever (15), the linear actuators being grouped together into two sets of substantially parallel and vertical actuators, a first set of which controls the pivoting of the manipulator arm (14) about a first axis, and the second of which controls the pivoting of the manipulator arm (14) about a second axis, perpendicular to the first. This invention is more particularly of benefit to the constructors of automobiles. <IMAGE>
