A reference source (5) is followed by an optical switch (6, 7) which brings, into the field of view of a deviating device (2), an image of the reference source (5). A circuit (4) for calibrating the distortion controls the deviating device (2) in order to produce a mesh of the field of view. A circuit (8) calculates, for each point on the mesh, the position, on the image supplied by a camera (1), of the image of the source (5). The circuit (4) computes, in response to this computed position, a correction coefficient for the distortion and stores, in a memory (3), the set of coefficients corresponding to the set of points on the mesh. The sight, used especially for the aiming of a weapon system, may be automatically calibrated without being passed onto a calibration bench (rig). <IMAGE>
