Humus is formed on the floor of an enclosure housing fowls, horses or cows by forming successive layers of gravel, humus starter, straw and manure, wetting the manure and underlying layers, forming a layer of earth and lime, again wetting, and finally forming a layer of dry straw to act as bedding for the animals. The floor may contain a number of drainage ditches for the removal of excess liquid. As the humus is formed from the manure and underlying layer of straw, it is raked to one side and placed in piles. The manure may be spread evenly over the floor twice a day.
|
