A container (1) for biologically treating waste water is subdivided by a closed, vertically inclined partition (5) into an activation area (6) and a sedimentation area (7). A baffle plate thickener (10) with parallel, vertically inclined blades is arranged in the upper part of the container (1). The container (1) is provided with a downcomer (11) which extends over the height of the container (1) and which is linked to the sedimentation area (7) through openings (15) at various heights. Suction tubes (24) that project into the sedimentation area or a shaft (25) in the activation area (7) remove excess sludge.
