Opt. branched highly crystalline polyarylene sulphides with a reduced crystallisation temp. are prepd. by reaction of (a) 75-99.5 mol.% dihaloaromatic cpds. of formula (I) (where X = halogen such as Cl or Br in the p-position w.r.t. each other and R1 = H,1-4C alkyl, 5-10C cycloalkyl, 6-10C aryl, 7.14C alkylaryl or 7-14C arylalkyl, or two ortho-bound residues R1 may together complete a condensed aromatic or heterocyclic ring with 5 or 6 ring atoms which may include up to three O, S or N atoms); (b) 0-5 mol.% w.r.t. (I) of a tri- or tetrahaloaromatic cpd. of formula ArXn (II) (in which Ar = a 6-14C aromatic gp. or a heterocyclic gp. with 6-14C atoms in which up to 4 ring C atoms may be replaced by N, O or S; X = halogen such as Cl or Br and n = 3 or 4); (c) conventional chain terminators, (d) alkali sulphides together with alkali hydrogen sulphides in the form of their hydrates of aq. mixts., opt. together with catalysts or other adjuvants in a solvent and (e) 0.5-25 mol.% of a comonomer or a mixt. of comonomers chosen from 3,4-dichlorodiphenyl sulphone, 3,4-dichlorobenzophenone, N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) -phthalimide, 4,4-dichloro triphenylamine, N-phenyl -4, 5-dichloro-phthalimide, N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) -hexahydrophthalimide, 2,4-dichloro-6-phenyl -triazine-(1,3,5), 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline, N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) -3,4-diphenyl dicarboxylic acid imide and/ or 2,6-dichlorobenzothiazole, at a pressure of 1-50 bar.
