[Also in Divisions B5 and El] An installation for the manufacture of several synthetic resin materials which may be the same or different comprises, see Fig. 1a, storage containers 1a-1g for the several starting materials A-G connected through valves 9a-g, two-way valves 11a-g, and isolating valves 10a-g to auxiliary tanks 2a-g intended to contain one day's supply; these are connected through double-acting pumps 12a-g to to pipe lines 3a-g. As shown in Fig. 1b there are three mixers 12, 13, 14 each connected to appropriate pipe-lines (according to the material to be produced in each mixer) through adjustable metering pumps 18b-e, 19a-d and f 20a-d and g, and non-return valves 21, 22, 23; the mixers are discharged by pumps 28, 29, 30 which may be injection pumps, or the materials may be sprayed or extruded. If starting material A is a polymerization catalyst the pumps 18a, 19a, 20a and 12a will be stopped before the others. There is an automatic solvent purging device 31. Samples of starting materials and mixtures may be taken as at 36, 37 and there are connections 38, 39, 40 for viscosity meters. A suitable mixer, Fig. 2, comprises three compartments 60, 64, 61 separated by plates 46, 47 with perforations 53 at various angles and each having a variable radius screw impeller stirrer with a scraping edge 82, (see Fig. 3, not shown); the stirrer in compartment 64 may alternatively be a rotary arm 65 as shown. The liners 45a, b, c are removable and the positions of the impellers on the shaft may be altered by means of distance pieces. There are inlets 59 and outlets 58, and an inlet 70 is provided near the outlet end for the polymerization catalyst. A heat exchange fluid is circulated through the chamher 72. In another arrangement the catalyst is added separately in a gear pump. The several mixers may be driven from a common motor in line horizontally or vertically, or through gearing (see Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown). The apparatus may be used to make a prefabricated reinforced building panel comprising a dense skin and cellular interior, see Figs. 7-16 (not shown) and Divisions B5, El. |
