A charge of liquid pig iron and solid scrap, the latter being greater in amount than could be melted by the heat available from the combustion of impurities, is blown with oxygen after calcium carbide has been added as a heat-generating and slag-forming agent. The charge may contain 13% to 55% of scrap metal. It is also stated that the use of calcium carbide permits the use of increased amounts of other coolants such as cold pig iron, iron ore, sinter or pellets. As exemplified sodium fluoride was added to the slag.
|
