A protective layer is formed on a diffusion transfer colour photograph by laminating a preformed transparent layer, comprising a film having a surface layer which consists essentially of a polymer containing hydroxyl groups, to said photograph by pressing the said surface layer to the image surface of the photograph in the presense of moisture, the amount of moisture and the nature of the image surface of the photograph being such that a permanent bond is formed. The transparent layer may comprise polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose, copolymers of vinyl alcohol with vinyl acetate, hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate or cellulose ester, embossable poly(vinyl chloride/ vinyl acetate) coated with poly (vinyl chloride/ vinyl ester) where the ratio of vinyl chloride/ vinyl ester is no greater than 1:1 and the vinyl ester is surface hydrolyzed or cellulose acetate butyrate coated with cellulose nitrate, cellulose nitrate and hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol in which the cellulose acetate butyrate layer may be coated with a mar-resistant layer of polymerized polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The embossable layer may complete an evelope surrounding the photograph. The image layer may be polyvinyl alcohol poly (4-vinyl pyridine). The photograph may be laminated while still wet from processing or treated with water which may contain polyvinyl alcohol.
