The slider apparatus (10) comprises a pair of side rails (12,14) separated by a recessed portion (16) and extending from the leading (20) to the trailing end (22) of the apparatus which supports a transducer (24). Each rail has a tampered portion (18) at its leading end and is provided with a trumpet-like air bearing surface (12A,14A) with its greatest width (LW) at the leading end of the slider. The air bearing surfaces are oblique, having a bevelled surface angle of between 35 and 55 degrees. In the rear area of the slider the air bearing surfaces are of equal width (TW). The apparatus is manufactured using a grinding wheel comprising two plates separated by a spacer disc and provided with bevelled grinding surfaces.
