Sludge is discharged into and temporarily stored in a tank which is pushed immediately in front of the abstractor assembly and floats in the water; and the collecton tank is joined to the sludge pump assembly by a flexible or articulated linkage. Pref. sludge remover assembly (1) moves on rails (4) along a long basin which collects water and mineral sludge behind a wall (2) within a mine shaft (3). The pump assembly sucks up sludge which is discharged via a pipe (20) into a floating tank pushed through an articulated linkage (14) which raises and lowers tank. The tank is stabilised by buoyancy chambers (16). Abstractor pipes (26) mounted on the mine shaft ceiling are lowered into the tank at convenient intervals to remove the sludge. USE/ADVANTAGE - Complex pipe fittings are not required for repeated connection and disconnection.
