In many light-detecting devices, it is necessary to mount the light detector with its own plane, sensitive surface against a non-plane contact surface. The standard procedure is then either to use a custom-made optical coupler between the curved surface and the plane surface of the photodetector or to use a silicone cushion to even out the curvature. Both methods have the disadvantage of losing light at the transitions. The new method involves the optical surface of the photodetector being shaped or worked so as to be identical to the light-emitting surface, although with opposite curvature. In this way, good optical coupling is achieved without an extra intermediate piece.
