Process for the production of an alcohol by continuously passing a fatty acid ester, a fatty acid triglyceride or a fatty acid through a hydrogenation catalyst in order to produce the said alcohol by catalytic reduction, according to which process the reactor employed is a stationary bed reactor in which the liquid phase and the gas phase are conveyed continuously together in parallel descending streams through a hydrogenation catalyst situated in the reactor; and at least one cooling device to cool the reaction system is provided in a position in the vertical direction of the reactor. There is thus obtained an alcohol of very superior quality, of great purity and which is contaminated by hydrocarbons and aldehydes as by-products only to a very small degree. It is thus possible to dispense with post-treatment to remove by-products.
