Cutting, boring etc. of metallic workpieces using laser beam

In a laser machining process, a radiation detector (13) measures workpiece temp. from thermal radiation (16) for control between limiting values. The upper limiting value is of a predeterminable temp. range of a temp. between the vaporisation temp. and m.pt. of metal or decomposition temp. of plastic. The lower limiting value corresp. to the m.p.t of a metal, softening pt. of the plastic or an ignition temp. of a reactive cutting gas. The beam is switched off if the upper value is reached and switched on again at the lower limit. Machining depth is measured for a correction value.
