A tool for crimping cable connectors has an operating mechanism which includes an eccentric cam which is rotated by a lever by means of a ratchet wheel or gear-wheel. In a first embodiment (Figs. 2, 4) two crimping jaws 5, 6 having M-shaped jaws are slidable in grooves 3 in the side pieces and are retained in position by a press bolt 9. The lower jaw abuts a cross bar 18 which is carried by plates 20 which are moved to close the jaws by eccentrics 21. A ratchet wheel 27 is mounted on the shaft 24 carrying the eccentrics 21 and the ratchet wheel 27 is rotated by a pawl 48 which is eccentrically mounted on the movable lever 63. In operation the lever 63 is oscillated and a pawl 29 prevents movement of the ratchet during return movement of lever 63. The pawl 29 can be disengaged by hand to allow the jaws to be reset using a tommy-bar (not shown) on the shaft 24. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the retaining bolt 9'is replaced by a yoke which is pivoted to one of the side pieces and which is held in position by a locking arm. In a third embodiment (Fig. 15, not shown) the ratchet wheel and pawl are replaced by a pinion and rack respectively having teeth of such shape that they can be operated in the same manner as the pawl and ratchet. However the rack is carried by a piston-rod mounted in the lever so that the rack can be reciprocated by hydraulic pressure to rotate the pinion. The tool can be operated mechanically (as in the first embodiment) or hydraulically. In a fourth embodiment (Fig. 19, not shown) the eccentric is mounted on a shaft carrying a pinion which is rotated by a pinion of the operating lever, a pawl engaging with each pinion so that oscillation of the lever causes uni-directional rotation of the pinions. The press jaws may be square and have an M-shaped jaw formed on each side. |
