A buttressing pledget (1) is molded or extruded. In one embodiment, the buttressing pledget (1) has at least one planar surface and an opening (2) that is essentially perpendicular to the at least one planar surface. The pledget (1) can be manufactured from a synthetic elastomeric material, and/or have two openings (2,3) and a protuberance (10,11) adjacent to the proximal ends. The protuberance (10,11) functions as a bumper or reinforcing element.
