Resolution of DL-carnitine nitrile halide (I) by producing a supersatd. soln. in a solvent, seeding or dissolving one of the optically active components thereof in the soln., so that the predominant component crystallises, and recovering it from the mother liquor. Economic resoln. of (I), which is hydrolysed to give optically active carnitine for pharmaceutical use.
