The invention relates to a key which is compatible with surface-mounted locks and with plug locks of the so-called European type. The shank of the key is equipped with a front radial bit (64) and with a rear radial bit (66) which are aligned and spaced along the axis of the shank so that the front bit (64) alone can penetrate into a European plug, the rear bit (66) remaining entirely outside, and so that both bits can penetrate into a plug of a surface-mounted lock. <IMAGE>
