A spinning frame utilises sliver from card cans which is carried down vertically to the drafting zone and is supported continuously by equipment installed for this purpose. Pref. the can is supported above a drafting zone, with the sliver turning around a larger grooved wheel at the top, and subsequently through the middle passage of a vertical series of grooved wheels with a half round groove. At least one of the wheels has a drive, and the whole series may be driven. The wheels in at least one section of the arrangement has the facility to deviate in direction to increase or decrease the friction surface. The sliver enters the drafting zone vertically, or alternatively this may be delivered into the rotor of an open-end spinning unit. As an alternative to grooved wheels, the sliver may be supported in the vertical section between the two surfaces of conveyor bands arranged to be adjacent, with both surfaces running in the same direction downwards. Some form of deflector band is required at the top in order to pick up the sliver as it leaves the can, and direct it to the downward moving bands. The conveyor band may have sprocket holes to regulate the drive. It may be a single continuous band furnished with pin projections to provide a grip on the siver. The band may take the form of a continuous steel band, running around rollers which include the top horizontal section to collect the sliver near the top of the can. USE - The sliver has to be fine count in order to be utilised at a spinning stage. This means handling becomes difficult, partic. when fed from above, out of a can. The continuous support arrangements overcome the difficulty.
