The placement of inter-area connectors on peripheries of bounded areas within an integrated circuit is determined by calculating globally optimum paths for connector lines between signal connectors for all the circuit components without regard to the boundaries of the components. This may be performed by calculating a globally optimum rectilinear spanning tree for each net of signal connectors. Once the globally optimum paths are calculated, inter-area connectors (81, 82, 91, 92) are placed at each location on a periphery of any of the circuit components where a globally optimum path crosses the periphery. Connector lines (111, 122) may be placed along the globally optimum paths. For signal connectors (12) and inter-area connectors (82) within each circuit component, internal connector lines (112) are routed between signal connectors along the globally optimum paths within the circuit component. |
