Apparatus for processing digital data such as a digital image from a medical diagnostic imaging device. The apparatus includes a digital memory (40) having 2<n> memory locations and having an input and an output. The memory (40) is selectively configurable either to process a single data word having a bit length of 1 to n bits or to simultaneously process at least two data words having bit lengths of k and m bits, respectively, where k + m </= n. When a single data word is processed, a single look-up table is stored in the memory. When first and second data words are simultaneously processed, combined first and second look-up tables are stored in the memory, wherein each value of the first look-up table is permutated with each value of the second look-up table. Preferably, two identical digital processing memories (44, 46) are provided to simultaneously process either two digital data words of 1 to n bit lengths or at least four digital data words of lesser bit lengths. Additionally, the digital memory (40) can combine two values passed simultaneously to the input and generate one or more simultaneous values at the output. For example, the effect of an overlay bit passed with a pixel value can be realized in this manner. |
