<p>PURPOSE:To reduce the speed of self discharge after a cycle of charge and discharge progresses by using as the separator of an alkaline storage battery nonwoven fabric having a sulfonated polystyrene layer provided on the surface of polypropyrene fiber. CONSTITUTION:Nonwoven fabric of polypropyrene fiber is used as the separator of an alkaline storage battery and is immersed in trichloro ethane having polystyrene dispersed therein and then dried to form a polystyrene layer on the surface of the polypropyrene fiber. The layer is immersed in concentrated sulfuric acid and subjected to sulfonation treatment to form the separator. The nonwoven fabric having the sulfonated polystyrene layer has durable hydrophilic properties and is high in mechanical strength and also the sulfonated polystyrene layer has durable hydrophilic properties and prevents dissolution inside the battery. During the manufacture cutting of the separator is therefore hard to occur and the speed of self discharge after a cycle of charge and discharge progresses is small and voltage drop at discharge at high efficiency can be reduced.</p> |
