<p>PURPOSE:To economically obtain the title compound by reacting a readily obtainable alkylaldehyde with formaldehyde by using an easily handleable catalyst comprising a mixture of a secondary amine and an acidic cation exchange resin in a specific ratio in a fixed temperature range. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde (e.g. propionaldehyde) shown by the formula (R1 is H or 1-10C alkyl) is allowed to react with formaldehyde in a temperature range of 0-140 deg.C, especially about 20-110 deg.C by using a secondary amine (e.g. dimethylamine or diethanolamine) and an acidic cation exchange resin (preferably porous type) in a ratio of 0.5-2 equivalents of acidic cation exchange resin based on 1 equivalent of the secondary amine to give an alpha-alkylacrolein. By this method, water is simply separated from the catalyst and economically consumption of energy is extremely reduced. The reaction product is an economically advantageous intermediate raw material.</p> |
