4-Nitrodiphenylamines are prepared from 4-nitrohalobenzenes and formyl derivatives of aromatic amines in the presence of potassium carbonate in an outstanding yield and purity if 1.5 to 4 mol of formyl derivative are employed per mole of halonitrobenzene in such a manner that the molar excess of the formyl derivative with regard to the halonitrobenzene is always 50 to 300%, and the water formed in the reaction is continuously removed from the reaction zone.
