[Also in Divisions C3 and H1] A catalyst composition consists of from 1 to 90 weight per cent of tungsten disulphide (WS 2 ) and correspondingly from 10 to 99 weight per cent of at least one oxide of molybdenum having the formula MoO x wherein x has a value of from 2 to 2.88; specified oxides of molybdenum are MoO 2 , Mo 4 O 11 and Mo 8 O 23 although material initially having the formula Mo 9 O 26 may be used in the preparation of the catalyst composition. The catalyst composition may be prepared either by treating a suspension of the oxide(s) of molybdenum with a solution of tungsten disulphide to yield an insoluble product or by intimately mixing the oxide(s) of molybdenum with tunsten disulphide. The catalyst composition may be in the form of particles which preferably have a size of from 1 to 10 microns and which may be compressed to sheet form. Alternatively, the catalyst composition may be prepared by coating a sheet of the oxide(s) of molybdenum with a thin layer of tungsten disulphide by for example vapour deposition. The catalyst composition may be used either alone or when associated with a base stratum and/or a binder as a fuel electrode (anode) in a fuel cell; examples of suitable materials for the base stratum, which preferably is electrically conductive, and the binder are given in the Specification.
