Compost is heaped in clamps 1, 2 and is turned by a conveyor 11 raising successive layers 21, 22 of each clamp and tipping then down the other side into layers 31, 32, ultimately to form a clamp 41 in the gap between the clamps 1, 2. The conveyor is either of the chain type shown, or of the screw type (Figs. 8-10, not shown), and is mounted on a trolley which traverses a gantry 3. The gantry is movable along the clamps which may for example be arcuate (Fig. 4, not shown) with the gantry pivoted at one end at the centre of curvature of the clamps. In another embodiment (Figs. 5-7, not shown), the gantry runs on tracks (72, 73) one of which also carries a conveyor (74) for depositing fresh compost.</p> |
