A system for measuring the relative position of a torpedo comprising an active sonar system 10 and a passive magnetic system 24, 26, 28, is connected to a computer 18 which, in response to a set of programs stored in the computer, operates the two systems installed in the torpedo for guiding it towards an iron-containing target 14. For long and medium ranges, the torpedo is directed towards the target by the sonar system, while for short ranges the magnetic system determines the x, y, z coordinates of the relative position between target and torpedo in conformity with a memorised calibrated magnetic model 32 of the target and with a numerical solution of non-linear equations relating the magnetic field of the target, measured in the torpedo, to the relative position of the target. Guidance information obtained in this way is then applied to the system 12 for guiding the torpedo to a desired point of impact on the target. <IMAGE>
