Plant for the production of steel by melting iron scrap, comprising an electrical furnace, means for supplying iron scrap in the form of individual charges intended to be introduced one after the other into the furnace, means for preheating each iron scrap charge, means for introducing into the furnace, after opening the cover, a charge of preheated iron scrap, by means of a charging receptacle open at both its ends and provided with a removable bottom. According to the invention the furnace charging receptacle can be placed alternately in a stationary position for preheating and then, above the furnace, in a position for pouring the iron scrap, and is used in combination with removable means for substantially leakproof closure, at least in a preheating position, of both its ends, an upper one and lower one respectively, so as to form a closed vessel for preheating the iron scrap charge which it contains, the said vessel being provided with two orifices at a distance in height and capable of being removably connected, in a preheating position, one to a conduit for introducing a stream of hot gases and the other to a conduit for removing the said gases. <IMAGE>
