[Also in Division C5] The monobutyl ethers of poly-(oxy-1,2 propylene) glycols having molecular weights of 270-335 are prepared by reacting 3À5-4À5 moles of 1,2-propylene oxide with 1 mole of n-butyl alcohol. The reaction may be carried out at a pressure of 5-10 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> (under an atmosphere of nitrogen), a temperature of 80-160‹ C. and in the presence of 0À1-1 wt. per cent of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. caustic soda or potash which catalyst is subsequently removed by acid treatment. The ethers may be mixed with minor amounts of anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation additives and employed as hydraulic fluids. |
