The portable radiation measurer includes two Geiger-Muller tubes, each connected to a pulse shaper generating outputs dependent on radiation intensity. The pulses are received by a high speed counter. restarted each second to provide count rates to a microprocessor. The microprocessor switches in that tube most appropriate to the detected intensity, and stores measurement algorithms. The latter provides an integration period over which current mean values of counts per second are calculated. Upon occurence of an abrupt charge in intensity, the integration period is reduced until substantially stable values, lying between tolerance thresholds, are again observed.
