<p>This is a dot-matrix device where a dot of the image is formed at each line/column crossover. A source emits electrons continuously in line with the columns, away from the image dots. In accordance with the signal it receives, a column electrode guides the electrons emitted in line with it to the selected line, or rejects them back to the source. The guide column electrodes are covered with an electrically insulating film, the electrons being guided in the vacuum immediately adjacent to the insulator, in line with the guide electrodes.
