Calcined refractory fibres for insulation and reinforcement at 1370 degrees C are spun from mother liquor prepared by dissolving metallic Al in an AlCl3 solution, adding a liquid which redues surface-tension, pref. acetic acid, adding SiO2 as a cpd. contg. inorganic Si and adding small amount acid oxide such as B2O3, P2O5 or TiO2 so that calcined fibre contains 68-80 wt. % Al2O3, 14-30% SiO2 and 1-10% acid oxide. Fibres are polycrystalline with predominantly mullite phase, transparent, have circular cross-section, 50-100 angstroms average crystallite size, flexible, have high tensile strength, resistance to abrasion, good workability, low heat-conductivity and high stability at 1370 degrees C. |
