1,215,728. Developer for penetrant testing. MAGNAFLUX CORP. 19 Feb., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 8009/68. Heading B1X. A developer for use in the penetrant method of detecting flows comprises an aqueous solution of a water soluble crystalline substance and a water dispersible surfactant. On crystallisation of the solution by evaporation of water, a water soluble film permeable by the penetrant is deposited on the test piece. The penetrant preferably contains a visible or fluorescent dye and the developer is applied after removal of the excess penetrant. The water soluble crystalline substance may be inorganic or organic and several examples are given of each. Several examples of nonionic, cationic and anionic surfactants are given and the developer may include a film former such as water soluble wax, acacia, gum arabic, hydroxymethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, bassonin or tragacanthin. The developer may include sequestering agents for use with hard water and corrosion inhibiting agents.
