<p>High-strength whiskers of sapphire coated with Fe, Ni etc. e.g. as a reinforcement for epoxy-resin fibrous mats, are produced by condensing metal carbonyls in the vapour phase in a chamber and electrostatically charging the whiskers so formed so that their ends fan out. This enables the crystalline fibres to be separately vapour treated. Apparatus for producing the fibres is also described.</p> |
