Several pairs of electrodes (20,22,24,26,28,30) electrically insulated from each other, are arranged at the walls (18) of the drive chamber (14), at which is applied a voltage (U(t)) altering in time and locality. The pairs of electrodes are acted on with a voltage source (U(t)) or several voltage waves (U(t)) following at a distance one after the other, which respectively lie at one pair of electrodes (20;26) or simultaneously at several adjacent pairs of electrodes, and spread from one pair of electrodes (20;26) to another pair of electrodes (22;28). The voltage (U(t)) has a max. value of about 4000 to 10,000 volts. The travelling electric field superimposed on the electro viscous liquid (10) is a unidirectional travelling field. USE/ADVANTAGE - Electric drive. Has good power-weight ratio, allows large movement displacement and produces no magnetic stray fields itself.
