Described herein is a method for the treatment of flue gas. In this method, flue gas containing CO2 gas and SOx gas is brought into contact with an absorbent containing an alkaline earth metal compound, whereby the gases are both recovered as the carbonate and the sulfite of the alkaline earth metal, respectively. Further, the CO2 gas produced from the decomposition of the carbonate can be reduced with hydrogen, whereby a CO2 reduction product such as a hydrocarbon or an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon is formed to achieve the recycling of the CO2. A system suitable for use in practicing the method is also described. <IMAGE>
