A lighting unit for illuminating the rear registration plate of a motor vehicle comprises a rectangular frame housing (1) and lens cap (2). The housing (1) has a moulded projection (6) which carries the electrical plug contacts (7) and spring clips (4) enable a push-in anchorage for the unit in a suitable aperture in the vehicle bodywork (3,5). The light source is a striplight (8) with conical end contacts (13) located in holes in the spring connectors (9,10) and a guide path to assist bulb replacement is afforded by stays (14) with V-shaped slots. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables convenient and guided insertion of bulb resulting in its correct optical/electrical location in relatively deep unit. Lens cap is independently replaceable if damaged. Stays guide cylindrical section of bulb contacts into correct position and at same time prevent over-insertion beyond holes in spring connectors.
