A circular valve sealing member of flexible material has a central rear protuberance 64 projecting from a surrounding rear surface 62 and an annular front sealing surface 46 for cooperation with a valve seating surface 24. The sealing member is inserted in a recess in the closure member 26 of a gate valve adjacent the valve outlet 18. The recess and sealing member are shaped and dimensioned so that the sealing member is stressed by deformation of the rear annular portion when in the recess with the valve open, Fig. 2. With the valve shut the sealing member is further stressed so that a rear peripheral edge engages the base of the recess. The closure member 26 has a C-shaped connection 36 engaging slots 38 in the valve stem 34. The space around the closure member is vented to the inlet by a duet 48 in the closure member. |
