PURPOSE: To make it possible to well integrate plastics of various applications by providing the device with optical parts which are composed of polymer plastics and are integrated to a semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION: An optical receiver is composed of a photodiode 1 for receiving light signals, a semiconductor laser 2 as a local oscillator, a waveguide 4, a polarizer 5 and a directional coupler 3 which are all integrated to the semiconductor substrate. The polarizer 5 is composed of the polymer plastic. The light signals are supplied to the polarizer 5 by a controller 51 to enable the adjustment in the polarization direction in accordance with an electric field Pockels effect or Kerr effect. The parts produced from the polymer plastics are used for arbitrary modulation, for example, these parts are used as an amplitude modulator shown as a switch 5, or as a frequency modulator or a phase modulator having frequency changeover keying of a short period. As a result, the polymer plastics are well integrated as the optical parts to the semiconductor substrate. |
